Over this semester I got to cover some social networking online communities and a whole lot of video sharing online communities. If time had permited, my next venture would have been wikis. But, just to touch base on some interesting wiki info that I came across, check out this blog: “Battleground Wikipedia”

In the article, TechCrunch blogger, Michael Arrington discusses the issue of editing a wiki about yourself. Apparently, taking the initiative to edit info within a wiki about yourself isn’t acceptable procedure amongst the wikiing community. This is obviously just a big no no when it comes to wikis, something that I was unaware of. I know that if a wiki about myself ever came in to existence, I would want to edit the things that weren’t true. What do you guys think?

Blip over Daily

According to you guys, Blip.tv is a better video sharing online community that DailyMotion.com. I liked hearing your feedback, and must agree that I prefer Blip over Daily for its obviously unique features. I also just like the idea of getting paid for sharing video files. If any of you have yet to vote, go check out the sites and let me know which is better for you.

Also, I really enjoy comparing two sites and then getting you guys feedback, if there is a certain type of Web 2.0 site that interests you, and you aren’t aware of how many are out there or which is the best, etc., let me know! I’d love to analyze what some of you are already interested in.

I have been looking at a rather basic Web 2.0 site in comparison to my lastest entries, known as Makezine.com. The community for introducing and guiding users to easily constructable gadgets for online geeks. The bloggers for the site offer informative, step by step instructions within their blogs for making some of their gadgets, while others use podcasts. The site offers a lot of interesting projects with Web 2.0 tools. However, from what I can tell there is very little feedback on the blogs for Makezine.com. I am not sure if this means the site is rarely visited, or if the community lacks active conversations. I had trouble finding out how to become a member, which also discouraged me as a curious outsider to such an intriguing community. Let me know what you think.

This vote is going to be based mostly on what is right for you, and what interest you have in video file sharing. This will be my last post on blip.tv and its deffinitely the most interesting. As you know by now blip.tv is a video sharing community that enables its users to start their own “show” and make money off of it through the sites’s advertising capabilities. Well, after looking in to blip’s method of advertising, I was very surprised to find how they make this possible with truly unique formats and effective marketing techniques. Blip offers three different types of advertising services which you can choose from to accompany your show. Those being…

1. midroll advertisements

2. postroll advertisements

3. adjacent roll advertisements

The advertising style which I found most interesting was the “adjacent roll,” which runs ads adjacent to viewer’s video player with highly targeted advertising technology. As your video plays, the adjacent roll recognizes your speech and displays advertising related to the content of your show. For instance, if you are talking about cars, then car ads should be displayed adjacent to your video. This is a brilliant way to target the right audience, and in turn ensure that viewers will help you get paid for your filming talent! The more people who click the ads, the more money you make off your videos.

I’m still looking in to Blip.Tv, the website has a lot to offer and functions as a community on many different levels. Here’s what the site had to say on the topic of community…

So I spent some time checking out the Daily Motion video file sharing website and found a really cool feature that I’d like to focus on, TAGS. DailyMotion is actually very similar to the ever popular YouTube, however, the way that they present their tags for the videos they offer is quite unique. Instead of just offering the typical search methods, with a search field that queries similar tags for videos, Daily Motion has a “Hot Tags” page that displays all of the most popular searches. Once you click one tag, it takes you to the videos that match it, and offers a list of narrower tags so you can find exactly what you are looking for. VideoEgg – Over Easy

VideoEgg.com was created to make video sharing/uploading as easy as possible. The site was constructed in Fall of 2005 by two Yale graduates in hopes of making video uploading as simple as the already flourishing picture uploading sites at the time. VideoEgg does just that and assists 63 sites in its network and 12,000,00+ viewers each month for online communities in their video sharing ventures. Although VideoEgg isn’t exactly a community in itself it is a network that serves other online communities with easy and high quality video.

Blip.tv isn’t your typical video sharing community. The community feeds off user creativity and creates a team with its users. If you do your part and provide the videos they help you out in return with services including free hosting, advertising, multiple formats, and actual promotion of the videos you upload. I just created an account with the site and plan on trying it out over the next week. I’ll be sure and let you know how it goes. Until then here is some good info on blip.tv
